Spinal Cord Tumors Surgical Treatment

Spinal cord tumors can occur within or adjacent to the spinal cord and can be classified according to their anatomic location:

1. Intramedullary – Intramedullary Tumors arise within the spinal cord itself. Most of the intradural intramedullary tumors are benign. However, the relationship between these tumors and the spinal cord is very important. While some of the tumors give a very good border, some of them have an unrelated relationship with the spinal cord called infiltration. If there is an appropriate indication, the treatment option should be surgical. The location of the tumor relative to the spinal cord should be well evaluated.
2. Intradural-extramedullary Tumors arising within the dura but outside the actual spinal cord are termed intradural-extramedullary. Most of the intradural extramedullary tumors are benign. If there is an appropriate indication, the treatment option should be surgical. In such tumors, all of the target tumor should be removed However, in some conditions and tumors this is unlikely. The most crucial part of the surgery is the separation of the tumor from the spinal cord.

Larger benign tumors, certain types of spine cancer (malignant), and progressive tumors may require surgical intervention.

The location of the tumor relative to the spinal cord should be well evaluated. Surgical planning is done accordingly. During the operation, Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is used to avoid neurological deterioration
